BlackBerry and Unity announced this morning their collaboration to create a Unity deployment add-on for BlackBerry 10 smartphones and tablets, giving Unity developers the opportunity to release their games for the BlackBerry 10 platform. The Unity developer environment, which is continually growing in popularity, is currently used by over 1.5 million game developers, especially those who develop for iOS and Android.
“Unity developers have an extensive catalogue of incredible mobile games, many of which are award-winning. We’re excited to offer Unity developers easy access to the new powerful and rich BlackBerry 10 platform,” said the CEO of Unity Technologies, David Helgason. “We’re eager to provide them with another exciting avenue to have their games devoured by an audience hungry for entertainment.”
BlackBerry went on to announce that they would shortly release details of “developer meet-up events” in Europe and North America, at which they would give qualified attendees copies of Unity Pro (usually $1,500 USD) as well as BlackBerry 10 smartphones, in order to “seed the Unity development community with […] the best possible environment to create amazing games for the new platform”.
The deployment add-on will be available in a limited beta this Spring, with its fully-fledged release slated for Summer.
