Valve have caused quite a stir lately after thousands of Steam users discovered a new entry in their Steam games list, an icon-less “game” called “ValveTestApp490”. Some users have even gone so far as to speculate that the game is a Half-Life 2: Episode Three beta. However, the truth is far from this.

“ValveTestApp490” is no more than a bunch of icons for non-Valve Steam games. How do I know this? Well, after discovering the entry in my own Steam account, I was inspired to do a little investigation. I used Steam’s built-in game backup feature to create a SID archive of the game, which I then scanned through using the HyperRipper function of popular game file extraction utility Dragon Unpacker. This resulted in quite a few Targa graphic files, which were all 16x16 icons for games such as Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII, Rayman Raving Rabbids, and even some games not featured on Steam, such as The Movies: Stunts & Effects.

It’s probably nothing to worry yourself over, and I’m sure Valve will be removing the application from everybody’s list soon enough. Rumour dismissed.
