Enthusiast publication CrackBerry is reporting that Sussex’s police department is planning to install 400 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in their police vehicles, for use as in-car computers with GPS and video chat capabilities. While they’ve only so far committed to a trial run, the final order could save the department a lot of money – as alternative equipment could cost up to £4000.

Special police applications will apparently be installed on the device, allowing access to criminal databases and the like; this is something already utilised in many Canadian police departments. Additionally, police departments in Wales are described as “very interested in the PlayBook solution” and are awaiting a report from Sussex on its effectiveness.
