The conclusion of Valve’s epic four-part comic The Sacrifice sees dedicated zombie-killer and ‘Nam veteran Bill die at the hand of three tanks after saving the lives of all three remaining Survivors; nobody expects that much story from Left 4 Dead, and after all the subtle character development we’ve seen throughout the games, Bill’s death – his real, irrevocable death – comes as something of a shock.
In order to pay our last respects to the old hero, we’ve assembled some of our favourite quotes of Bill’s from throughout the game, which you can read below.
“Son, we just crossed the street. Let’s not throw a party ‘til we’re out of the city.”
“A few years in the service might have slimmed you down and shut you up, Francis.”
“Even being in a war doesn’t prepare you for this – they never stop, they come at you and come at you and they never goddamn stop.”
“You know who’s gonna survive this mess, Francis? It ain’t the fellow making jokes.”
“Son, we’re immune, we’re tired, and there’s infected in the damn woods, now cut out the shit and let us in!”
“You gettin’ tired, Francis? Tell you what: I’ll go find us a boat, and then I’ll come back, pick you up and carry you there.”
“Dammit, Zoey! We trusted CEDA! We trusted the military! And they left us to die! Do you think they’ll ever let us back in? We’re on our own, kid. It’s high time you started acting like it.”
“Hell, I was too old for this shit fifteen years ago.”
