Rumours were sparked last week when we revealed in this article that Mass Effect 3 was amongst a list of high-profile games marked as coming out for a platform called only “Next Gen” on EA’s official media extranet. While a number of other websites have caught onto the story, EA’s European PR co-ordinator has explained to us that “Next Gen” refers only to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

It still seems a little out of place; not all Xbox 360 and PS3 games are listed as “Next Gen”, whereas Mass Effect 3 and Battlefield 3, two games already rumoured to be coming to the Wii U, are. On the other hand, Need for Speed: The Run is also listed as available for “Next Gen”, but that doesn’t seem like a likely title for release on Wii U.

Until later next year, when the Wii U’s launch is impending, we can only speculate as to whether these high-profile franchises will be making an appearance on Nintendo’s upcoming games console. For the time being, we’re assured this curious categorisation choice is absolutely innocent, albeit open to misinterpretation, and in EA’s defence, it has not been removed. It may truly “just cover Xbox 360 and PS3” as we were told after all.
