Half of those who have preregistered for BlackBerry 10 phones at Canadian carriers are currently iPhone or Android users, claims Todd Coupland, an industry analyst from the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Coupland made the comment as part of a longer note to CIBC’s clients last week, which has been picked up and disseminated by mobile news blog BGR.

“In Canada 50% of preregistration at the carriers are not currently Blackberry users,” wrote Coupland. The first BlackBerry 10 phone, the BlackBerry Z10, is currently available in the UK and is slated for release in Canada later in February. “This was a surprise and a datapoint that will be watched closely in other regions.”

Coupland also emphasises the value of BlackBerry 10’s large app storefront, which he estimates will boast 100,000 apps by the time of the platform’s launch in the United States this March, and of BlackBerry’s new Creative Director, Alicia Keys (who appeared at the Super Bowl in New Orleans last night).
